Reading Notes:
White paper about how organizations are using podcasts to fulfill their missions
* The term podcasting is misleading since an ipod or other MP3 player is not necessary to listen to the syndicated audio files
* While awareness of podcasting has risen significantly, the number of people listening to podcasts has not changed that much over the past few years
* This white paper outlines steps to create a podcast and the software needed to produce and syndicate programs
* Effective podcasts are those in which voices are enhanced with intonation or exaggerated expression
* Non Profit Organizations are more likely to repurpose audio content like lectures or radio shows into podcasts, rather than creating web-specific podcasts
* The author studied 3 NPO’s in particular that had created podcasts and found that none of the efforts were funded by grants
* The three NPO’s are presented as case studies with best practices included
* For a Washington Planned Parenthood the podcasts are geared toward education and advocacy to those who need it most, and entertainment is a key element of the programs
* A North Carolina chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society found that helping potential listeners understand that they did not need to use an ipod to listen to programs increased the number of users
* First Book, an author interviewing group, found that by making podcasts part of its blog, allowed the scheduling to be more flexible
